The Prayer of Catherine of Siena
You, O eternal Trinity,
are a deep sea, into which the more I enter
the more I find, and the more I find the
more I seek. The soul cannot be satisfied
in your abyss, for she continually hungers
after you, the eternal Trinity, desiring
to see you with the light of your light.
As the hart desires the springs of living
water, so my soul desires to leave the prison
of this dark body and see you in truth. |

Catherine of Siena (1347-1380)
Catherine of Siena was a well-known mystic from Italy and a nun in the Dominican order that flourished in the fourteenth century. unlike other religious groups, the members of this organization lived at home and devoted themselves to a life of penance and contemplation. She single-handedly persuaded Gregory XI (1370-78) to return to Rome after a long period of six successive French popes in history who decided to rule from Avignon, France. this period is also known as the "Babylonian Captivity of the Church" (1305-1370). |
