Healing
Christianity for the Rest of Us:
How the Neighborhood Church Is Transforming the Faith
by Diana Butler Bass
"Consider this an invitation. I invite you on my pilgrimage to some very different kinds of churches, old Protestant churches that have found new life in the face of change. They reminded me that Christianity is a sacred pathway to someplace better, a journey of transforming our selves, our faith communities, and our world." ... from the Introduction.

Commentary - Healing Touch - Revisit Ch 7 - Betty Petersen
Healing Touch is a therapy that is an energy based approach to health and healing. This non invasive approach affects not just the physical body but mental, emotional and spiritual health and healing. Complements traditional Health Care.

Healing done by the body itself, not drugs, OR, treatments. As energy workers we can be booster cables for Christ energy to help the inner healer do what it needs to do, to bring balance and harmony to the person.

Curing is the elimination of disease.

1.What I have learned from my experience with HT at the church-

There are lonely people- who come to talk and for appropriate touch, we live in a touchless society.

Mentally ill- who lack support system, and who are frustrated with dealing with the system and falling thru the cracks. When people are ill they are very vulnerable and need an advocate.

People dealing with pain- who get some relief and pain killers are more effective with energy work.

People trying to do self care, to maintain the health they have ie kidney function from 5-10% up to 50% and HT has been the only change.

People wanting to complement traditional HC—pre op to decrease anxiety, and post op to decrease side effects and increase recovery time.

Caregivers who are getting burnt out and needing an opportunity to recharge their own batteries, and to find some peace and relaxation.

Cancer patients who are looking for relief of side effects and some peace. Ca pts can be transformed in their healing journey– Dr too busy, no time for self and realizes this is a gift.

Clients dealing with migraines, pain 17-4, or sinus headaches, relief then or 4 hours later.

Support for the dying and their families.

Clients dealing with transitions—move, lost job, relationships, etc

An opportunity for students to work under supervision, towards their certification in HT

2.What I envision to enhance this ministry

I would like to start by sharing the words of nurse Jean Watson- who has a caring theory –that is “creating a healing environment at all levels (physical as well as non physical, subtle environment of energy and consciousness) whereby wholeness, beauty, comfort, dignity and peace are potentiated”—so maybe that is the spiritual clinic as mentioned in the book. Or as Michael Moore in film Sicko—we need Christianized health care.

Dr Bev Baughman DuPree-Holism embraces the concept that a person is an interconnected being and all elements of that being must be treated equally to address the complexity of the whole pmes system. We are all spiritual beings having a human experience.—Medicine is fear based, devoid of love, and it is love that heals. (the Healing Consciousness)

To have healing services as part of the regular church services on an ongoing basis. Which would also include a celebration and gratitude for health and healing.

To have HT as part of the grief support services that we offer.

To have young people learn some simple techniques, to empower them through out their life ie tools as part of their own personal first aide kit. Ie 3yr who helped her mother get rid of her migraine.

Resource for self care and empowering individuals to be the captain of their hc team.. We are getting so specialized, and sub specialized, that the whole person is lost in the shuffle. Ie ortho—hip, shoulder. We all have inner guidance and intuition, and need learn to listen and follow it, but most of the time one has 30 secs. To present their case in the traditional system. In essence we don’t have HC in this country we have illness care. People are trying to do things for their health and are forced to pay out of their own pocket, for complementary therapies.

Most insurance companies don’t cover complementary therapies, and then try and submit your receipts to revenue Canada, and they are denied because they aren’t medical driven. We could certainly do a lot to force changes to the income tax act.

The Father of Medicine Hippocrates has said “ it is natural forces within us that the true healers of disease.” So the question is what can we all do to support the inner healer.

Scudder technique—from Rev Scudder, as you have been sitting for some time and we need to shift and move the congested energy.
